Pastor who snubbed nose at ban to keep preaching to packed church has died
      Published: April 15, 2020

In Biblical terms, perhaps it was a case of reaping what he sowed.

Either way, a Virginia pastor who kept preaching to a packed church despite bans on gatherings of more than 10 people brought in to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, has died after contracting COVID-19.

Bishop Gerald O. Glenn, the top holy man at New Deliverance Evangelistic Church in Richmond, died Sunday according to a video posted on the church’s Facebook page, just a week after being diagnosed with the coronavirus. His last sermon is believed to have been held March 22.

“I firmly believe that God is larger than this dreaded virus. You can quote me on that,” he said, according to the New York Post. “I am essential. I’m a preacher - I talk to God!”

Glenn admitted it was “controversial” to preach to a packed church despite protocols to keep people safe and acknowledged he was in “violation” of those protocols. But he vowed to keep preaching “unless I’m in jail or the hospital.”

The late bishop’s wife, Marcietia Glenn, is also reportedly ill with the virus.

Their daughter, Mar-Gerie Crawley, is now urging people to stay home to avoid getting COVID-19. Her father initially dismissed the symptoms to keep preaching but his death and her mother’s diagnosis has forced Crawley to see the light.

“It becomes very real to you,” she told WTVR earlier this month. “I just beg people to understand the severity and the seriousness of this, because people are saying it’s not just about us, it’s about everyone around us.”
