Volume Licensing and the Office Registration Wizard
Background Information
Q1. What is the Office Registration Wizard?
A. The Registration Wizard is a new anti-piracy technology being testing in shrink-wrapped Office 2000 products. It is designed to be simple and unobtrusive while protecting customer privacy by allowing anonymous registration.
Q2. How does the Office Registration Wizard work?
A. When you install a single copy of Office 2000 or one of the Office 2000 products (Outlook, Word, Excel, FrontPage, PowerPoint), you will be asked to register. You may register via the Internet, email, phone, fax, and postal mail. You may use the product up to 50 times without registering, after which you must register to continue using the product. When registering, you provide a 16-character Installation ID and the name of the country from which you are registering. The Microsoft Registration Center returns to the customer an 8-character Confirmation code that verifies that installation of the product. Registration is simple and quick, and once complete you won't have to think about it again.
Q3. What about schools that purchase Office 2000 under volume licensing?
A. The Office 2000 Registration Wizard does affect volume license customers that purchase Office 2000 through Microsoft Worldwide Fulfillment, Open License, Campus and School Agreement. (The only exception is Select License customers who install Office 2000 from their Select media.) Volume license customers will receive special instructions in their documentation regarding how to manage the Office Registration Wizard for their users. If you are a volume license customer, please review the confirmation letter that was sent to you by Microsoft.
If you are a Campus or School Agreement customer, please review the deployment guides at:
School Agreement
Campus Agreement
Q4. Why are volume license customers exempted from this?
A. Volume license customers have unique deployment issues because of the large number of desktops on which they must roll out Office and they participate in a variety of license compliance methods.
Q5. Isn't this an invasion into customers' private information?
A. No. Microsoft does not force customers to give personal information. The only information that you are required to provide in order to register is your country.
Q6. When and where will the Registration Wizard be implemented?
A. The Registration Wizard will be included in Office 2000 in select markets around the world - Brazil, Australia and New Zealand, as well as in the Academic market in the U.S. and Canada.
Q7. How does the education market benefit from this approach?
A. Over time, reduced piracy means that the software industry can invest more in product development, quality and support. This ensures better products and more innovation for our education customers. Ultimately, you will benefit from the economic impact of reduced piracy through more jobs and higher wages. You will also receive the best value for your software investment by being able to receive updates, product information etc.
This wizard also helps unsuspecting customers from purchasing counterfeit software. Customers who purchase counterfeit products could find they are missing key elements, such as user manuals and product identifications, Certificates of Authenticity and even software code. They may also find that the counterfeit software contains viruses or does not work as well as the genuine product.
Q8. Won't the Registration Wizard make schools buy more software?
A. No. Education customers will need to buy the same number of copies or licenses for Office as in the past in order to comply with our licensing agreements.
Software Piracy
Q9. Is Microsoft specifically targeting the academic market because piracy is pervasive there?
A. No. The rate of piracy in the U.S. and Canadian academic market is the same as the general market in the US and Canada. Our education customers purchase special academic versions of Microsoft products, offering a contained audience for piloting the Registration Wizard in the U.S.
Q10. How will the Registration Wizard help thwart piracy?
A. The Registration Wizard ensures that the copy of Office 2000 is valid and has been installed on a PC in compliance with the End User Licensing Agreement. Installations beyond that allowed in the license agreement will fail to register. This prevents pirated copies of Office 2000 from being used.
Q11. Why is software piracy important enough to take this measure?
A. People who use illegal software not only hurt themselves, but they also contribute to a problem that cumulatively can have a negative effect on job creation locally and regionally in the software industry and other related businesses.
Many small developers are not able to sustain the repeated theft of their products and are being forced out of business. Currently, there are at least several software vendors that have products on the market using phone registration for Office 2000 Registration Wizard and other purposes. As a leader in software technology, Microsoft also plays a major role in finding easier ways to serve our customers as well as keep the industry healthy.
Installing and Using the Office Registration Wizard (for single copy purchasers)
Q12. What happens if I don't want to or forget to register?
A. You will be reminded to register each time you start an Office application. You can choose to postpone your registration up to 50 times. If after the fiftieth reminder you have not registered, you will need to contact the Microsoft Registration Center to keep using the product.
Q13. Why are you forcing us to register?
A. Microsoft designed the Office 2000 Registration Wizard to verify licensed software and thwart the continued spread of piracy worldwide while making registration easier for our customers.
Q14. What if I don't have an Internet connection?
A. You don't have to have an Internet connection to register. You may also register by fax, postal mail or telephone.
Q15. I do not want to register. What can I do to turn this off?
A. The Office Registration Wizard cannot be turned off. However, the only information that you are required to provide in order to register is your country.
For schools that need to install multiple times within an organization, contact your software reseller regarding eligibility for purchasing licenses through the Microsoft Open License program.
Q16. Will this just be in Office or will it be in standalone versions (Outlook, Word, Excel . . .)?
A. The Office Registration Wizard will be present in all standalone versions of Word 2000, Excel 2000, PowerPoint 2000, FrontPage 2000, Outlook 2000, and Access 2000.
Q17. Will the Office 2000 Registration Wizard make it more difficult for me to install and use the software?
A. No. The Office 2000 Registration Wizard is designed to be simple and unobtrusive for customers who legitimately acquire the software. You will have five different options for registering, including through the Internet or by e-mail, fax, postal mail and telephone. You will also be able to delay registering for up to 50 uses of the product. However, for those who obtain their copy of the software illegally, it will make life more difficult. Through beta tests, more than 20,000 customers have already used the Registration Wizard with little or no difficulty.
Q18. What if I have to reinstall the software, will I have to register again?
A. No. You may reinstall Office on the same machine as many times as you like and you won't need to register each installation. However, if you format your hard disk prior to reinstalling Office, you will need to register again.
Q19. What information does Microsoft get from my machine when I register? Why is this information relevant?
A. In order to associate the relevant copy of Office 2000 with the hardware on which it is installed, the Registration Wizard creates a unique hardware identification code. This code is based off the hardware components in the PC, and not based on any personal information of any kind.
Q20. How many installations am I allowed to make with one product license?
A. In the case of Microsoft applications like Office 2000, the Microsoft End User License Agreement allows you to install the product on one computer. If you are the primary user of the product, you may also install one copy on your laptop computer, for your exclusive use only. If you need to install on more than one computer or a qualifying laptop, you need to acquire more than one license of the software product.
Dialogue boxes in the set up process indicate the following:
- This software is licensed for installation on a single computer.
- Installing on multiple computers may result in civil or criminal penalties.
Q21. I can't install this product on more than one computer without getting messages asking me to register the product. Why?
A. The Microsoft End User License Agreement for applications products permits you to install the product on one computer only. If you are the primary user of the product, you may also install one copy on your laptop computer, for your exclusive use only. If you need to install on more than one computer or a qualifying laptop, you need to acquire more than one license of the software product. One of the purposes of the Office 2000 Registration Wizard is to provide helpful reminders to honest customers to assist them in complying with the license agreement so that they do not inadvertently install illegal copies.
Q22. I am installing a copy of this product on my laptop computer. I have already registered my product but I am getting messages asking me to register again. Why?
A. If you are the primary user of Microsoft applications like Office 2000 and Word 2000, the End User License agreement allows you to install one additional copy on your laptop computer for your exclusive use only. You need to contact the Microsoft Registration Center again to activate and verify the use of the acquired license on your laptop computer.
Volume Licensing and the Office Registration Wizard
Q23. The Office 2000 Registration Wizard is not practical for large organizations. How will large accounts deal with these complications in the setup?
A. Larger customers that take advantage of the Microsoft's volume licensing programs for education will not need to register. The Office 2000 Registration Wizard is included only in packaged products that are available in the retail channel.
Q24. What about Open License customers? How can they do legal multiple installations from a single set of disks?
A. Microsoft provides Open License customers with instructions explaining how to install multiple copies. Please read information included within the Open License Agreement for more information.
Q25. As a Select customer, how can I legally install on multiple computers?
A. Microsoft provides Select customers with a special Select CD-ROM kit designed specifically for easy installation of a large number of licenses. To find out more information, please contact your Microsoft Large Account Reseller.
Q26. My school installs applications over a network. Will we need a License Disk every time we do a network installation of a Microsoft application on one or more computers?
A. No, installing from a network or using the Administrative Setup feature in Office Setup already takes into account the volume licensing privileges you have. However, you must still comply with the Microsoft End User License Agreement for applications products and have a separate license.
Q27. I don't currently purchase Office products under volume licensing, but it sounds like a good idea. What options are available for education?
A. There are four volume licensing programs targeted specifically to help K-12 and higher education institutions:
Campus Agreement. The Microsoft Campus Agreement license program is available for higher education institutions that want the convenience of making one annual payment for software; to count people, as opposed to computers; the option to include students in their volume licensing program; to run the most current version of licensed software; and an easy way to ensure that their institution is compliant.
School Agreement. The School Agreement license program is available for K-12 institutions that want the convenience of making one annual payment for software; to run the most current version of licensed software; and an easy way to ensure that their institution is compliant.
Open License for Education. A great volume licensing option for small and medium-sized schools, school districts, colleges or departments of larger universities. Ideal for those whose needs include: purchasing smaller quantities of licenses, a simple transaction model, and broad flexibility.
Education Select 4.0. Perfect for education institutions with 1,000 or more PCs and mixed Microsoft product requirements. The ultimate solution for those who want to: acquire an extensive list of products, forecast their software use over the term of the agreement, and extend volume pricing across the entire institution.
