[Sellout of Israel unfolds
By PAUL JACKSON - Calgary Sun
October 25, 2000
We are now witnessing - scene by sordid scene, shabby act by shabby act - one of the great betrayals in history. It is the sell-out of the tiny but valiant state of Israel to the terrorist zealots of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Hezbollah, Hamas - and the blood-lusting sheiks and dictators of the Arab world.
With Iraq's demonic Saddam Hussein being one of them.
It is reminiscent, in its dreary and dreadful way, of the sell-out of Czechoslovakia to Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler in 1938, and of the sell-out of Eastern Europe and the Baltic states to Soviet dictator Josef Stalin in 1945. All of these were unforgivable crimes, and yet, without the conviction and courage to stand up for what is right, we are about to replay them.
The scenario that has been unfolding for the past month - said to be a spontaneous uprising by oppressed Palestinians - is in actuality a carefully orchestrated plot by Islamic extremists to finally turn the world against Israel and make the Israelis grovel for whatever bits and pieces of their shattered country they can salvage. We should hang our heads in eternal shame for our lack of morality and acquiescence to this charade.
Since the State of Israel was established in 1948, its opponents have never ceased in their determination to wipe it out and commit one of the greatest acts of genocide in history. Unable to do so militarily - the Israelis have made mincemeat of the Arab forces every time they have attacked - the thrust has now been to destabilize Israel and wear it down by subversion, non-stop acts of sabotage and propaganda. One of those tools ironically is the UN, supposedly the protector of countries, but now the hall from which anti-Israeli resolutions are passed routinely.
Alarmingly, the subversive campaign against Israel has been so successful, just this month Jean Chretien's government backed a UN resolution condemning Israel as "an occupying power" within its own land. How banal can you get?
Well, Chretien himself this year urged PLO terrorist leader Yasser Arafat to make a unilateral declaration of an independent Palestinian state within Israel. Our country's own federal government has sided with our nation's enemies. The cunning of the PLO and its adherents almost takes one's breath away. Arafat has gone from skyjacking western airlines and random acts of murder to convincing the world that Israel must make concession after concession to the PLO until there is nothing left.
Constant riots within Israel - photographed by the world's TV cameras showing 'innocent' stone-throwing Palestinians brutalized by Israeli soldiers - and an ever-constant Arab military presence on its borders are all part of the plot.
It's frightening to realize no Israeli man, woman or child can count on being safe as they walk in the suburbs of Jerusalem or Tel Aviv. But with one million Israeli Arabs in open revolt already in the streets, that is the reality. Israel, the only democratic country in the Middle East, is now an armed camp.
Through every agreement, including Oslo and Camp David, the Israelis are being pressured to capitulate inch by inch and mile by mile.
As prominent U.S. columnists George F. Will and Charles Krauthammer - two of the few, but gallant band of journalists who refuse to join in the chorus for Israel's destruction - have both noted, the death knell of the Israeli state involves giving the capital, Jerusalem to the PLO; forcing Israel to return to the borders set by the UN in 1947, and allowing the return of descendants of some 700,000 Palestinians who left Israel between 1947-49. Going back to the 1947 borders would make Israel unworkable as a nation, and having to absorb perhaps five million new, hostile Arab residents would be the coup de grace.
Just 44 years ago next month, on Nov. 4, Soviet tanks crushed the Hungarian revolution and massacred an innocent people. Right to the end, the Hungarians pleaded for the West, NATO and the UN to come to their aid. To our shame, we turned our backs. Will we now do the same to the Israelis?
