Arrests in Calcutta attack
Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002
CALCUTTA, India (AP) - Police arrested five Bangladeshis and detained three Indian teachers at an Islamic school for suspected involvement with Tuesday's attack on policemen guarding the U. S. cultural center in Calcutta, a government official said Wednesday.
"We are verifying their links with Pakistan's spy agency and a Dubai-based mafia don, but we can't disclose details at this stage," said Sourin Roy, chief secretary of the West Bengal state government.
The arrests were made in Basirhat, 40 miles north of Calcutta and close to the India-Bangladesh border, on Tuesday night, Roy said. Those arrested were to be produced in a court later Wednesday.
Four Indian policeman were killed and 20 were wounded when motorcycle-riding assailants fired from automatic weapons as they drove by the American Center early Tuesday. One of the contract guards on duty at the center was hurt. Police said the eight arrested may have links to Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence spy agency.
Pakistan has denied its government is involved.
Meanwhile, the U.S. cultural center reopened Wednesday but the bloodshed and new heavily armed police commandoes in front of the building were expected to dissuade visitors.
"We're open for business," said Rex Moser, director of the American Center. "There are new sandbags and armed commandoes out front. I assume that would dampen attendance."
The gunmen escaped. Indian officials have blamed the attack on Pakistan-based Islamic militant groups seeking to merge the Indian-controlled portion of the Himalayan region of Kashmir into Pakistan. Other Indian officials said claims of responsibility were telephoned to police from Dubai, and suggested a connection with a criminal gang.
Pakistan-based militant groups have denied any hand in Tuesday's attack.
And U.S. State Department officials have not supported India's assertion that the attack was an act of terrorism.
